10 Things To Do After An Accident

Immediately after involvement in an accident with a car, bicycle, truck, pedestrian, or motorcycle, a victim should do the following:

  1. Make sure that all parties to the accident are ok. If not, call 911. Often minor accident injuries are not “felt” until days after. When seeking medical care be sure to keep a record of all treatment.
  2. Refrain from making statements like “I’m sorry,” as this can be seen as an admission of liability. Only exchange insurance information with the other driver.
  3. File an accident report to local law enforcement. Obtain a copy of the accident report filed, usually available within days of the accident.
  4. Get all the relevant contact information of all eye witnesses. Witness accounts can be very helpful in making your case. Do not depend on this information being on the police report.
  5. Take pictures of the damage to the car(s) and the scene at the time of the accident. This will serve as evidence if there is a dispute. Document what happened, as your memory at the time of the accident will be most reliable.
  6. Report the incident to your insurance company and ask if you should file claim with other driver’s insurance company.
  7. Consult with an experienced auto accident lawyer to evaluate the facts and circumstances surrounding the accident.
  8. Obtain an estimate for repair/replacement of property from your Insurance Company – this valuation will serve as the amount you can recover. If you are not happy with the figure from your insurance company, seek outside quotes.
  9. When/If the other party’s insurance company contacts you; your best response is to have them get in touch with your attorney. Because an experienced attorney will have your best interest when handling your loss.
  10. Don’t accept the first  offer you get. Rushing to settlement can be a costly mistake. Once you sign their forms, no future claims can be made. Consult an experienced auto accident lawyer.
